What can you expect to learn?

By the end of this learning module, you will be able to:

    • Describe meaningful and authentic consumer involvement in research.
    • Outline the steps involved in the research
    • Recognise different levels of involvement that exist for consumers in research
    • Recognise skills and attributes required as a research team member

    Module Schedule:

Topic 1 - What is consumer involvement in research and why should I become involved?
Topic 2 - Research Funding and Research Ethics
Topic 3 - The research process and research quality
Topic 4 - How do I become involved in research?
Topic 5 - Opportunities for consumer involvement
Topic 6 - Working as part of the research team
Topic 7 - Introduction to working with data

Each topic includes information to read, videos to watch, targeted questions for self-reflection and knowledge checking in the form of a short quiz. Most of the topics will take about one and a half hours to complete. It is recommended that you work through all of the content included in each topic.

How will my learning be recognised?

Certificates of achievement in a specific area of study of professional development are sometimes called micro-credentials. They are provided electronically, as a digital badge. The digital badge is a record of your achievement that you can share with others as evidence about what you have learned. You might like to share them with peers, employers, or researchers.

You may be eligible to receive a continuing professional development digital badge called “Partnering with consumers in research” module. To be eligible, you must complete ALL the quizzes that are included in all of the topics and achieve 80%.

You can still do this module for your interest without doing the quizzes, but you will not receive the digital badge.

Please note that you will not be able to use the digital badge as credit for any other education course that you may be interested in at Griffith University.

    Accessing and Navigating the module

We have developed this module to optimise the accessibility for all consumers. Should you have any difficulties, please email the team at inclusivefutures@griffith.edu.au.

When viewing the content in this module, you can turn on Accessibility view. This view allows Assistive Technology to access all the content and provide jump locations to assist users to move through the content.

For more information on how to turn on and use Accessibility view including keyboard shortcuts and closed captions, visit ‘Accessibility features in Sway’.

(Please note when you click on the links above and below, they will open the webpage in a new window. When you have finished viewing the webpage, close the window to return to this webpage)

Throughout the module, we will also use Microsoft forms as a way of increasing interactivity and providing feedback.  For information on the accessibility features in place for Microsoft forms, visit the following links:

    How we partnered with consumers

This project is proudly supported by the Engaging Science Grant "Disability-led citizen science driving research outcomes that matter"  and in conjunction with The Hopkins Centre Ambassadors and following consumers:

    • Janelle Colquhoun
    • Angel Dixon
    • Jillian Kingsford-Smith
    • Lindsay Nott
    • Helena Roennfeldt

    Helpful hints

    1. When completing each learning module, be mindful that there is no functionality to save your progress, so it is best practice to complete the quiz in one sitting.
    2. Once you "submit" your quiz, you will get a copy of this.
    3. You can complete the quizzes as many times as you like to ensure you achieve the 80% score required.

How long will each module take to complete?

We expect each module will take you 1 to 2 hours to work through.  If you prefer to work in shorter sessions, we have indicated some opportunities for breaks throughout each of the modules.
